Hitler spent most of the first volume of his book while staying in Landsberg's "The Impact of the Failed Nazi Coup" prison on his deputy Rudolf Hess. Its original title was "Four and a half years of struggle against lies, stupidity and cowardice." The publisher of the book, Max Aman, advised him to summarise it to "my struggles" only. This book, which included his autobiography and a presentation of his ideological doctrine, was dedicated to Dietrich Eckart, a member of the secret society known as the Thattle Society. This book was published in two volumes during 1925 and 1926, and sold about two hundred and forty thousand copies between 1925 and 1934. By the end of World War II, about ten million copies had been sold or distributed. Newlyweds and soldiers got free copies of the book
